Somaliland: VP Sayli Briefs EU on Prevalent Drought Status.

Somalilandsun: The European Union has promised to support the Somaliland government’s fronted drought Relief efforts.

This pledge was made during a virtual meeting between Vice President Abdirahman Abdillahi Ismail ‘Sayli’ and Ms Andrea Koulaimah. Directorate-General for European Civil Protection and Humanitarian Aid Operations (ECHO)
ECHO is the humanitarian arm of the European Union with the mandate to preserve lives, prevent and alleviate human suffering and safeguard the integrity and dignity of populations affected by natural disasters and man-made crises.
The VP who was flanked by members of the national Drought Relief Committee initiated discussions with a detailed briefing on the drought situation in Somaliland.
On the eastern regions of the country which are most affected the VP further briefed on assessment of status courtesy of a monitoring tour by the National Committee.

Stating that the ongoing National Drought Relief efforts are solely funded by the Somaliland government the VP revealed that the Kitty is continuously being replenished with contributions from local businesses, associations, organizations as well as ordinary citizens.
“As the situation in the country worsens day by day, the demand for relief is increasing more so due to the large number of climate refugees from the Central Regions of Somalia, Puntland and the Somali Regional State of Ethiopia.
In conclusion, the Vice President called on EU officials to provide immediate assistance to those affected by the drought.
At the end of the meeting, EU officials pledged that their humanitarian assistance to Somaliland had already been channeled through international agencies, and that the assistance plan would be developed by the Government of the Republic of Somaliland in collaboration with these international agencies.
