Today marks the 35th anniversary of Somaliland’s reassertion of its independence on 18 May 1991, an occasion being commemorated extensively across Somaliland and around the world. This year’s celebrations are notably distinct from previous commemorations, particularly in light of the prevailing political climate, evolving international relations, and the renewed spirit and sentiment among the people of Somaliland.
The commemoration of the 35th anniversary of Somaliland’s restored sovereignty comes at a time characterised by a political, diplomatic, and strategic environment that differs significantly from any period Somaliland has experienced since 1991.
