Somaliland: Mine Decapitates Erigavo Farmer

ERIGAVO (Somalilandsun) – A buried mine remnant of the 1980s civil war in the country has decapitated a farmer in Erigavo the capital of Sanaag Region
Mohamed Arussi a farmer in the outskirts of town and currently receiving medical attention at the Erigavo main hospital lost an eye, an entire left hand palm and three fingers of his right hand after a buried mine exploded while he was engaged in his farming activities.
Mohamed Arrusi amputedTaken to hospital doctors were also forced to amputate his right leg up to the knee since it was completely mangled by the mine said to have been buried in the 1980s by forces loyal to the then dictator Siyad Barre whose troops were engaged in annihilation activities against residents of Somaliland then Northern Somalia region.
Somaliland remains home to thousands of unexploded land mines that date the 1980s and early 90s this despite strenuous efforts by the government and partner organizations like Min action, Halo Trust and the Danish Demining Agency among many others
