Somaliland is the north corner of the former Somali Republic (merger of Somaliland and Somalia) that no longer exists. On October 14, 1996 Somaliland adopted its current flag (see below).

According to the designer and lawmakers at the time: The flag of the Republic of Somaliland shall consist of three horizontal, parallel and equal sections, the top section, which is coloured green and has inscribed in its midst in white in Arabic language La Ilaha Ill-Allah, Muhammadan Rasulullah ( لا إله إلاَّ الله محمد رسول الله, There is no god except for Allah, and Muhammad is the messenger of God); the middle section is white and has at its centre a black star; and the bottom section is coloured red.

I feel this flag does not represent Somaliland people and its more like Italian flag with some Arabic font and funny black star. That Irish/Italian-Arab flag makes no sense to me. I am not sure how that pasta flag ended up with Somaliland. It is just a strange thing that lacks creativity, uniqueness, appeal and how Italy’s symbol can be another unknown nation’s symbol is mind-boggling.

Besides it resembles Ethiopia’s own Gambela regional flag.

Nation uses its symbols so it can be unique and be known for that. These symbols are her brands, identity and logo just like businesses.

I am sure everyone can guess who they trying to be here:

That’s right….they imitating….

When Somaliland imitates Italy and adds few things that make no sense to the general Somaliland public, it is not doing it self a favor to standout. It is already struggling telling the world that she is not “Somalia”. The name itself is already confusing name and when you mixed Italy, Saudi Arabia and silly black star you just buried yourself.

Italy

Somaliland

So I have decided to design a flag for Somaliland.
