Somaliland: President Enacts Citizens and Voters Registration Law

New law paves the way for a new Somaliland voters register replacing thre old one discarded after 2010 presidential elections/google image

HARGEISA (Somalilandsun) – The establishment of a voter’s register and the issuance of Citizens identity cards is now law in Somaliland.
This development follows the ratification of registration bill by President Ahmed Mahmud Silanyo following the successful approval of the draft bill by Guurti and the House of representatives the two chambers of the Somaliland parliament.
In a presidential decree # JSL/M/WM/240-2867/122014 released for public consumption by his press office president Silanyo decreed that as from this date (24th Dec) and in powers conferred on him by articles 75 and 90 of the Somaliland constitution and after approval by parliament the registration of citizens and voters in Somaliland is now legalized

President Silanhyo became the first citizen to receive the Somaliland National ID Card in Hargeisa on 25th Sept 2014
While the registration of citizens for their first ever Somaliland ID card has been ongoing for sometimes the enactment of this law paves the way for establishment of a voters register as a prelude to presidential and parliamentary polls slated in the country in mid-2015.
