Somalilandsun: It is illegal to arrest all elections candidates certified by the Somaliland national elections commission-NEC.

This was stated in a statement issued by the Somaliland electoral body in Hargeisa where it was reacting to the latest arrest of two opposition parties candidates.
Stating that all bona fide candidates are granted immunity from arrest by the constitution NEC called on government agencies to abide by the law and refrain from arresting candidates approved by the commission.
Regular arrest of candidates in the parliamentary and local Councils elections slated for May 31st this year especially if those sponsored by opposition political parties has been the norm.
But this reaction by NEC follows the arrest of a Wadani party Sool region parliamentary candidates Qaasin Adan Suleiman and that of Abdilahi Hirsi Hassan a Berbera local Council candidate sponsored by UCID.
The arrest of the duo which continues to raise alarm nationwide comes in the heels of several similar other ones, ironically all from either of the two opposition parties of UCID and Wadani
