Lets Get to work on electioneeering

By: Ahmed Kheyre

Somalilandsun – The Somaliland Constitutional Court appears to have finally settled the political crises pertaining to the presidential and parliamentary elections. The court has decreed the decision made by the Somaliland House of Elders (Guurti) stands, but with their date of April 2017 superceded by the courts new date of March 2017. The court rejected the agreement between the three political parties and also by passed the date chosen by the Somaliland National Elections Commission(NEC) of June 2016.

So there you have it. The adminstration of President Ahmed Mohamed Mohamud “Silaanyo” receives an almost two year extension of its mandate, and we, Somalilanders are stuck with a “do nothing” parliament for two more years.

It is time to clean house. Once the parliament agrees on its election bill and the new seats are taken into consideration regarding population changes, density, new regions, etc, we need to clear out the parliament and Guurti. Out with the old, and in with the new.

Somaliland is embarking on a generational change. We thank the old stalwarts, we honour their service, we will solicit their council, but it will be, Insha’Allah, a new dawn.

Somaliland needs its younger, educated, energetic generation to take the helm of the nation, and no two people fit that image than Jamal Ali Hussein and Abdirashid Hassan Matan. Do not get me wrong, I am not politically aligned to UCID or communally aligned to either young man, but, of the the three political parties, they are the only ones visible to lead our nation forward.

Somaliland is at a crucial stage in its existence. The nation needs renewal, hope and a clear indication of its future aims. We are tired of cronoism, nepotism, and favourism. Much like when Bill Clinton and Al Gore swept away the tired and dusty ancien regime of the late Ronald Reagan and George H.W. Bush, heralding in a new generation of leaders, then the people of Somaliland must do likewise in 2017. Insha’Allah.

There is so much to do. Every facet of our state needs reform and renewal, from the constitution right down to providing basic services and creating a future and hope for our youth. This a job for a younger generation. It will not be easy, but, with hard work and the blessing of Allahu Subxaana Wa Tacaal, it will be done.

It is time to get to work.
