SOS sheikh Secondary School in Somaliland won the annual Zayed Future Energy Prize for 2016

Somalilandsun – The Zayed Future Energy Prize came to fruition in 2008 as a result of the vision of the late Ruler of Abu Dhabi and Founding Father of the United Arab Emirates, Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan

the $4 million Zayed Future Energy Prize, managed by Masdar in Abu Dhabi, annually recognizes various achievers with innovative solutions to create a new, sustainable energy future from various sectors i.e. from A Large Corporation, A Small and Medium Enterprise, A Non-Governmental Organization, a Lifetime Achievement recipient and up to 5 High Schools from 5 different world regions.

In the school category for Africa the SOS sheikh Secondary School in Somaliland won the annual Zayed Future Energy Prize for 2016 in which young Abdirahman Ahmed Shunuf representing the winning local school was awarded the coveted price

SOS HG Sheikh Secondary School in Somaliland, a not-for-profit institution that caters to 300 pupils and focuses on science and maths learning shall user the prize for: “[Installing a hybrid energy system using photovoltaic solar and wind turbines. In addition, cooking gas is very expensive for the 293 families in our town, so we will set up a biogas generator,” said Khalid Mohammad, science teacher at the school.

The SOS Sheikh Secondary School is situated near the town of Sheikh in Sahil region of Somaliland and a three-hour drive from the capital Hargeisa,
