Somalilandsun- The various challenges facing Somaliland especially security at this stage when rapid changes are taking place in the Horn of Africa region are of concern to the United Nations.
This was indicated during a meeting between Somaliland and UN held at the Presidency in Hargeisa on the 4th November 2018.
The visiting UN delegation was led by the body’s Secretary General’s new Special Representative to Somalia, Ambassador Nicholas Haysom.
This is the maiden visit by the SRSG to Somaliland having replaced his predecessor Nicholas Kay last month.
Discussions of the closed door meeting were divulged during a presser held jointly by the Somaliland foreign minister Dr Saad Ali Shire and SRSG Nicholas Haysom at the presidency.
“We held very fruitful discussions that revolved around continued relations, security and resumption of talks with Somalia” said FM Saad Ali Shire.

As for the UN chief in Somalia, it was a pleasure to visit somaliland more so for familiarization for it is my first visit since I assumed duties, said Amb Haysom
In his briefing the SRSG revealed that security issues were discussed in depth especially the Conflict in Tukaraq .
“Unless this Conflict is resolved The short and long impact might be very disastrous” said Amb Haysom adding that
The conflict might spread to the wider Horn region which is at the moment experiencing rapid political, security and economic changes.
Nicholas Haysom is a South African lawyer and diplomat who has been serving as the United Nations Secretary-General’s Special Representative for Somalia since 2018. He focuses on democratic governance, constitutional and electoral reforms and the reconciliation and peace process.
