0

Somalilandsun – Under the UN Joint Programme on Local Governance and Decentralized Service Delivery, UN-Habitat has been implementing the Urban Road Classification and Road Naming in Hargeisa Project, which was initiated as a pilot project to help create a foundation for the development of an urban road network plan for fast-growing Hargeisa.

UN-Habitat has supported the Municipality of Hargeisa through the project’s technical committee to develop a technical specification guideline for manufacturing and installing the street/road signage in Hargeisa.

The municipality contracted local enterprises to procure 62 signposts and manufacture 179 signs in line with the technical specification guideline. On 20 December 2012, the Mayor of Hargeisa, Eng. Hussein Jicir, held a press conference to introduce the street signage and then installed the first street sign. As of 2 January 2013, all the signage was installed in Hargeisa. The project will be extended to develop a current map of Hargeisa city, the first such map in Somaliland , and continue with naming the remaining minor streets and establishing the street address system.
