GABILE (Somalilandsun) – A newly constructed learning centre, the New Gebiley Secondary School, have just been handed over to the government becoming the second institution of higher schooling in the town.

Constructed under the auspices of Mercy Corps’ program ‘Kalkaal’ (loosely translated meaning assistance), the high school is expected to ease the congestion currently burdening the only other similar institution, Qalah Secondary School.

The USAID funded educational entre dubbed New Gebiley Secondary School consists of 4 classrooms, associated office and water system complete with a reservoir tank.

At a function held over the weekend to hand over the institution to the Education department, the area governor Mr. Yusuf Ibrahim Geedi thanked both the Education Minister and Mercy Corps for making the necessary efforts that saw the project implemented.

“You have both done your parts and the rest is incumbent upon us to see the school is running and maintained”, he said. He added that it will ease congestion at Qalah School.

On his part, the regional education coordinator said that he expected the new school to see more girls joining the foray and stepping up education in the region as a whole.

Mercy Corps acting country head and his ‘Kalkaal’ program officer Messrs Mohammed Abdillahi and Josephat Mukhanji expressed similar sentiments.

“Without collaboration nothing tangible can be achieved”, said Mr. Abdillahi while underscoring the need for collective responsibilities amongst all stakeholders.

“Constructing the classrooms is easier than churning out graduates, thus, efforts should be stepped up hence many should be enrolled”, Mr. Mukhanji advised the audience.

Mercy Corps have hitherto built primary schools in the region at Jijile and Laan-barwaaqp.

It has also rehabilitated intermediate schools at Kalabayd and Aadda, both of Gebiley region.
