somaliland recognition

Somalilandsun-Somaliland Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation is proud to announce the creation of the @Somaliland account on twitter, which is hosted online at www.twitter.com/somaliland . With the help of staff at twitter, the @Somaliland handle has been recovered for the use of Somalilanders across the globe.

The account has been set up on a similar model to the @Sweden and @Ireland handles, which each week selects people from the respective country to curate their nation’s twitter handle. @Somaliland will be curated by a different Somalilander every week; either from inside the country or from Somaliland’s diaspora. A wide range of people will curate the account, from various places, backgrounds, and livelihoods, in order to showcase the diversity of Somaliland’s global community to the world.

With such a lofty goal in mind, the MFAIC has invited Jama Musse Jama, the founding director of Hargeysa Cultural Centre, to be the inaugural curator of the @Somaliland account. In its first four days, the account has made an immediate interest; gaining 186 followers and 18,000 tweet impressions.

Somalilanders crave for recognition In future weeks the account will pass through the hands of other well-known and well-respected Somalilanders online, many of whom have already been lined up. We encourage Somalilanders of all walks of life to engage with all our curators as they discuss the life of Somaliland, and to let others know of this initiative.

Sa’ad Ali Shire, Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, said: “I am pleased to see the reclamation of the Somaliland handle, and proud that it will be curated by Somalilanders themselves. Somaliland’s people are our greatest asset, and I look forward to seeing how this new public platform helps to share their stories with the world.”
