Somalilandsun: The government of Somaliland has reaffirmed commitment to a timely presidential election come November, 13th.
This was stated by government spokesman and minister of information Suleiman Yusuf Ali Kore during an interview with BBC Somali service.
The pledge to hold timely, elections was made by President Muse Bihi Abdi during a state of the nation Address at a joint session of the bicameral Somaliland Parliament on the 10th May
Minister Suleiman Kore was reacting to doubts expressed by the opposition parties UCID and Waddani following the establishment of a committee to probe a long standing dispute with the Somaliland national Elections Commission-NEC.
“We believe that the statement from the opposition parties does not exist, the government is always holding and pushing for the election to take place on time,” said Minister Kore.
Minister Kore, who also spoke about the commission appointed by the president for administrative disputes between members of the electoral commission, said the law empowered the president to appoint a commission in case of disputes between commission members.
Yesterday, presidential candidates from the UCID and Waddani parties accused President Muse Bihi Bihi of not being ready for the by-elections later this year, and of wanting the elections to be postponed in order to get an extension.
They said they would not recognize Bihi as president unless there was an election on November 13 2022.
