HARGEISA (Somalilandsun) – The national Human Rights commission has been asked to ensure that it fulfils its mandate accordingly.

The head of state H.E Ahmed Mahmud Silanyo has reiterated his administration’s commitment to ensuring that citizens are availed all their basic fundamental rights.

The head of state revealed this during an address to the Somaliland National Human Rights Commission-SLNHRC at a hotel in Hargeisa where the nation was commemorating the World Human Rights Day held annually on 10th December.

While terming the establishment of SLNHRC as evidence of his commitment to the promotion and provision of Human Rights to all citizens without let or hindrance, the head of state asked the rights body to ensure that it fulfils its mandate accordingly.

Said he, “My administration is committed to ensuring that citizens are availed their fundamental rights which is a prerequisite of nationhood”

While refeSultan Nassir (2nd left) among Participantsrring to the recent election results related violence in Hargeisa, Dr Silanyo who condoled families of the three people who died also ordered the National election Commission-NEC to ensure that it satisfies supporters of some parties who claim the elections were rigged.

Terming the local council elections which were held on 28th November as having not only concluded successfully but peacefully as well, the head of state informed NEC that the onerous task of ensuring that results are correct and impartial thus satisfy the party supporters who have resorted to violence after claiming vote rigging.

As he urged all citizens to ensure that prevalent peace and security is sustained, the head of state also asked for continued oneness of the people thence their concerted efforts towards alleviating poverty, job creation, security and public services etc.

Other speakers at the World Human Rights Day commemorations included the SLNHRC chair M/s Farhiya Husein Jahuur anfd the minister of Justice Mr. Husein Ahmed Aideed among others.

Addendum

Immediately after the national election commission-NEC released results for the Hargeisa municipality elections on 6th Dec, supporters of Haqsoor party who accused the election body of vote rigging started violent protest demonstrations that were quelled by police with the resultant death of three and injury to nine demonstrators. A number of police officers were also injured some severely by the belligerent demonstrators who were mostly from the capital citys’Ahmed Dagah district where Haqsoor derives most of its support.

Following this disturbances NEC announced on 8th Dec a review of disputed election results for Hargeisa municipality as deterrence to further protests.

Somaliland National Human Rights Commission (SLNHRC) is a statutory body established by an Act of Parliament No. 39/2009 entitled “The Somaliland National Human Rights Commission Act”. The Act which entered into force on December 2010 saw the full establishment of the commission, clarification of the mandate, functions and institutional structure of the Commission.
