Somaliland: Political Parties Agree to Each Nominate six Women and one Minority as Candidates in Parliamentary Elections

Somalilandsun: Somaliland’s three national parties, UCID, WADDANI and KULMIYE, have reached a formal agreement on the issue of marginalized communities and women thus agreed to include women and minority members in their candidates.

The agreement, released by Somaliland’s national parties states that the parties will include three members from the marginalized communities and 18 members from women as candidates during the forthcoming parliamentary elections slated for May 2021

The tripartite agreement reads as follows: –

Preface

In cognizance of the negative impact the absence of  Women and marginalized  communities have in the country  as pertains representation in the national parliament and local councils , Somaliland’s three national parties, UCID, WADDANI and KULMIYE hereby jointly agree that in the forthcoming elections

  1. It is mandatory that 18 women vie for parliamentary seats nationwide
  2. It is mandatory that 3 candidates from marginalized communities for parliamentary seats nationwide  and
  3. Both women and marginalized communities should nominate as many candidates as possible to vie for positions as Councillors during forthcoming local council elections

This decision by the three political parties means that each party shall mandatory have 6 women candidates and 1  representing  marginalized communities for member of parliament

The decision comes in the heels of legislators in the House of Representatives having failed to approve a quota bill for women and marginalized communities
