HARGEISA (Somalilandsun) – The holy month of Ramadan concluded with Faithful’s who had been fasted for 30 days congregating for Eid-Ul-Fitr prayers at various venues countrywide.
In an address to the nation at the Hawadle estate sports grounds in Hargeisa where he joined ordinary citizens at the Eid prayers President Ahmed Mahmud Silanyo commended the nation for having perform the obligatory fast proscribed by Islamic religious tenets to all healthy Muslims.
“I pray that Allah shall facilitate a similarly successful Ramadan in the coming years for not only Somalilanders but for all Muslims worldwide” Said the president
While commending citizens for their cohesiveness president Silanyo said, “Our National Cohesion is the Engine behind Security, Peaceful Co-existence and Peace”
Urging the nation to sustain the prevailing unity whose results are the envy of many, the head of state said that the hopes of international recognition carried by the entire country shall be sooner rather than later since the world is now awakening to the realization that the Somalilanders decision of self-rule is irrevocable.
In an earlier address the president also informed that the country shall not be participating in the conference on Somalia to be hosted in Brussels by the European Union-EU this September because the proposed agenda has nothing to do with or offer Somaliland.
“We shall not be taking part in the September Brussels conference because it is entirely to do with issues related to our neighbour Somalia” adding that the Country is treating the Brussels meeting similar to others that it had refused to partake having been deduced as of no interest in any way.
Justifying the decision to boycott the conference even after official invitation by the EU, president Silanyo said that attendance will be contrary to the sovereignty of the nation since the organizers had not put in the proper protocols for Somaliland to participate as an independent country.
“Additionally the conference has nothing in its agenda pertinent to somaliland” added the president.
Despite the fact that somaliland a former British protectorate has been an independent though internationally unrecognized country since 1991 when it broke away from its 1960 voluntary union Somalia various administration notably the current one of president Hasan Sheikh Mahmud are intent on reunion.
Somaliland united with Somalia in July 1st 1960 just 5 days after it got its independence from Britain on June 26, 1960. The union with Somalia has not been successful for the people of Somaliland. Corruption, anarchy and the socialism regime of Dictator Siad Bare prompted the struggle of Somalilanders in 1982 when the Somali National Movement (SNM) was formed in London to free the people of Somaliland from the socialist dictatorship of Somalia.
Somaliland finally broke away from Somalia on May 18, 1991 after a bloody civil war against the dictatorship of the socialist regime of Siad Barre.
Somaliland hopes to gain international recognition very soon after the country has carried out two free and fair presidential elections , one parliamentary election and two municipal elections.
