LAS ANOD (Somalilandsun) – For the first time in 25 years elections are expected to take art in all areas of Sool region.
This follows the completion of a training for voter registration clerks conducted by the Somaliland National Election Commission –NEC in the Sool regional capital of Las Anod.
“We are proud to announce the end of voter registration training conducted for 305 university students” said the NEC deputy chair, commissioner Mahmud Hasan Wais during a post training press briefing in Las Anod.
Stating that his is leading a team on an assessment mission as per the procedures of voter registration commissioner Wais noted that the successful completion of the his mission plus the training shall result in a blanket coverage of not only voter registration but actual balloting in the entire Sool region as well.
Pushed by the central government NEC is determined to conduct elections in areas of the eastern regions for the first time in 25 years owing to the fact that past exercise were not undertaken fully due to some political issues now resolved.
According the the NEC regional chairman for Sool Abdilahi Laba’gole the 305 trainees who completed their induction were selected from a strenuous vetting process of over 800 applications from Nugaal, Buhoodle and East African Universities all based in the region.
Sool shall be the next region to register voters as soon as the current exercise in Neighbouring Sanaag is completed thence complete countrywide registration having been undertaken in Awdal, Maroodi-jeep, Sahil and Toghdeer .
The ongoing voter registration precludes preparations for the presidential and parliamentary elections slated for Somaliland on the 28th March 2017.
