Somalilandsun – Hibaq Jama has won Labour’s elections for 2013 council elections in Lawrence Hill. Labour performed very strongly in East Bristol, seeing off the threat from UKIP, but failed to make inroads in the north and west of the city – where the Tories clung on to Avonmouth and Henbury.

Lawrence Hill has had Labour councillors for many years – Councillor Brenda Hugill and since 2011, Councillor Margaret Hickman. The ward includes Barton Hill, St Jude’s, The Dings, the area around Easton Leisure Centre and Redcliffe. It’s a diverse area, including Bristol’s big transport hub Temple Meads station, with a mix of tower blocks, new build flats, traditional terraces and conversions of older industrial buildings.

Labour investment in community facilities includes Barton Hill Settlement community centre, much loved and used.

The ward also has some of the biggest challenges of the city – areas of economic and social deprivation persist, badly affected by the economic downturn.

According to Mo Ali of Medeshivalley The new councillor at Lawrence Hill ward Ms Hibaq Jama is of Somaliland origin and not only hopes to help her constituents solve the issues affecting them but also intends to utilize her position to advance political and development issues in her motherland of Somaliland
