Somalilandsun: The Republic of Somaliland celebrated 31 years of her withdrawal from the voluntary later turned fateful Union with Somalia on the 18th May 2022.
The festivities marking this auspicious day in the calendar of the yet to international recognized country were commemorated globally with main events being in the capital Hargeisa.
After spectacular March past by formations of the various Somaliland security forces and other civilian entities the president Muse Bihi Abdi delivered his speech to the nation.
Poignant in his address that touched on several important issues was castigations for continued insinuations by leaders in Somalia that Somaliland is part and parcel of their federal government.
“after thirty one years of separation Somalia still continues to believe in the impossible that we are one” said President Bihi
The president said that successive governments in Somalia since the collapse of the central government have not fully understood the issue of Somaliland’s independence.
“In the 31 years we have been separated from our brothers we have not received any acknowledgment, we have not received any arbitration. They are equal in authority, “said President Bihi.
The President congratulated and prayed for the newly elected President of Somalia, Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, and wished him well in recognizing the independence of Somaliland, and the establishment of two fraternal governments.
“The president who was elected yesterday and the two presidents who surrendered, we welcome you very much, may God bless you and may we pray for those who are breaking your differences, and may we be at peace with each other and be brothers. “We want it,” said President Bihi.
“Brothers and sisters, we have been doing it and we do not know anything better than you. We want you to know us and we do not reject Somaliland,” added President Bihi.
Explaining the reasons for Somaliland’s withdrawal from the union, the President said that during the 30 years of the Somali government, Somaliland had been subjected to repression, left-wing, destruction and repression.
