Somalilandsun – Malta and Somalia discussed irregular migration in a meeting held between Prime Minister Joseph Muscat and the Somali Deputy Prime Minister Fawzia Yusuf Adam. Both Dr Muscat and the SFG minister are currently in New York participating in the United Nations General Assembly.
The meeting was intended to open diplomatic relations between the two countries and was held on Dr Muscat’s insistence as part of the main aims of his visit, following several attempts made by Foreign Affairs Minister George Vella.
Malta made a formal request to launch diplomatic relations with Somalia and this should be officially acknowledged in the coming weeks.
Tangible methods of how discussions can take place, were discussed and the government is attempting to address the issue of irregular migration with Somalia.
Dr Muscat described this is an important step which may lead to different ways of addressing the problem.
