HARGEISA (Somalilandsun) – The police force has captured people alleged to have been involved in the failed assignation attempt on a Hargeisa magistrate.
This was disclosed by the national police commander General Abdilahi Fadal Iman during a press briefing at police headquarters in Hargeisa where he also commended the diligence of police investigators who have been on the case relentlessly since day one.
On the early morning of 11th June, 2012 two men armed with pistols opened fire at magistrate Abdirashid Mohamed Mahmoud “Duran” as he emerged from a mosque near his home in New Hargeisa district, where they inflicted not life taking bullet wounds.
The police commander who did not indicate the number of suspects captured said that the perpetrators of the heinous crime will be arraigned in court as soon as police complete relevant paperwork.
The arrest of the perpetrators of the failed assassination attempt on the life the Hargeisa Chief district Magistrate was received with a big sigh of relief nationwide as the attempt had elicited lots of condemnations and finger pointing directed in various directions.
According to the police chief eight suspects had been in police custody helping with investigations that culminated in the announcement that the real perpetrators are officially in police custody. General Fadal further disclosed that the assassination attempt was related to the last case magistrate Duraan presided over, in which 3 government officials were convicted of embezzlement and fraud.
The police boss further commended traditional leaders in Hargeisa without whose active support the case would not have been solved.
Following the assassination attempt, the president H.E. Ahmed Mahmoud Silanyo ordered the immediate airlift of the injured magistrate to Djibouti for specialized medical attention. Magistrate Duran though still recuperating in hospital is said to be in perfect condition.
On Saturday last, the Sool regional prosecutor was assassinated by yet unknown gunmen within the compound of his house in Las anod town.
