Somalilandsun- On the 26th June 1960 Britain relinquished control of its British Somaliland by granting it full independence
Though 18th May the day the Somaliland officially withdrew from its fateful union with Somalia 26 years ago is commemorated as Independence Day in actually fact This day, the 26th June marks the birth of the Independent State of Somaliland.
That independence was so hastily given away, only to be regained at a considerable cost nearly 30 years later but Somaliland remains internationally recognized as a sovereign nation.

“whereas it is intended that the Somaliland Protectorate shall become an independent country on the twenty-sixth day of June 1960 (hereinafter referred to as “the appointed day”) … We do hereby, by and with the advice of Our Privy Council, proclaim and declare that, as from the beginning of the appointed day, Our protection over the territories known as the Somaliland Protectorate shall cease.” Royal Proclamation Terminating Her Majesty’s Protection Over The Somaliland Protectorate dated 24 June 1960.
