Somaliland: Taiwan Commits to Enhanced Relations with Hargeisa

Wu Zhizhong, Parliamentary Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, as the presidential envoy, led a delegation to visit the Republic of Somaliland from December 11 to 14 this year (2024) to attend the meeting of the new President Abdirahman Mohamed. Abdullahi’s inauguration ceremony, and congratulated President Abdullahi in person on behalf of our government and people, demonstrating the friendly relations between Taiwan and Somalia.
During his visit to Somaliland, Special Envoy Wu interacted closely with senior officials of the new government and special envoys from various countries.
In addition to attending celebrations related to the establishment of the new government, he also met with the new President Abdullahi and the outgoing President Muse Bihi Abdi respectively, representing the President. Lai Ching-te and Foreign Minister Lin Jialong expressed congratulations to Solan’s new government and thanked President Abdi for his concrete contributions to Taiwan-Somalia relations during his tenure. The two sides also exchanged in-depth views on areas of cooperation between Taiwan and Somalia and the priority policy plans of the new Somalia government.
When President Abdullah met with Special Envoy Wu, he said that Taiwan is an important partner of Somaliland and we jointly face various regional challenges including Chinese coercion. The two sides cooperate in the fields of public health, education, information and communications, and maritime patrol. All have achieved significant results, effectively improving the well-being of the Somali people. I would like to thank President Lai Qingde for specially appointing a special envoy to visit Somalia to attend the inauguration ceremony of the new government. He reiterated that the new Somaliland government will continue to maintain close and mutually beneficial cooperation with Taiwan, and hopes to attract more Taiwanese in the future. The Republic of Somaliland is located in the Horn of Africa, the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden. It is an important friendly country to Taiwan in East Africa. Since the two countries established representative offices in each other in 2020, they have continued to develop and enhance bilateral relations on the basis of mutual benefit. The ministry will also work hand in hand with the new government led by President Abdullahi to continue to enhance the well-being of the two peoples and allow more African friends to see and understand Taiwan.
