Somaliland: Puntland Selects MPs to Elect President

GAROWE (Somalilandsun) – Only 66 people from Puntland shall constitute electorate during president selections slated at Garowe the enclave’s capital on 8th January 2014.

The 66 voters in a region with millions in population became the official selectors of the next enclave president after a vetting and conflict resolution committee announced their appointment as members of the Garowe based regional parliament.

According to Mr. Yusuf Abshir Adami, chairman of the Puntland Vetting Committee who made the made the announcements at Parliament Hall in the capital Garowe 34 of MPs are first timers while the remaining 32 were recycled from the outgoing house.

All the new MPs were submitted to the Vetting Committee by their community elders and approved through the criteria process by the Vetting Committee. Puntland undertook similar political process most recently in 2004 and 2008, ahead of presidential elections in 2005 and 2009, respectively.

Members of parliament purportedly representative the Somaliland regions of Sanaag and Sool are among the 66.

The much touted presidential selection 22 candidates are challenging the strongman Abdirahman Farole for the right to regional president title.
