BURAO (Somalilandsun- A landmine killed the driver of an electricity supplier truck in October district of Buroa , the second largest city of Somaliland.

The electricity company workers were installing equipment in the area when the mine exploded . Mustafe Yussuf Mire (Gurey) who was the driver of the truck died on the spot . Police and demining staff came to the area immediately and cordoned it off for search of other mines in the vicinity .

Landmine is an explosive that is laid just under the surface of the ground and detonates if disturbed by pressure or the proximity of something such as metal. Tens of thousands of mines had been buried in many parts of Somaliland , particularly Burao and its surroundings , by the regime of Siyad Barre during the civil war in the late 1990s and early 1991 . Many demining NGOs such Danish Deming Group (DDG) and Halo Trust had earlier removed hug number of mines from many regions of Somaliland . The explosion today in Buroa indicates that there is more to be done in removing these dangerous devices from the Somaliland.
