Somaliland: Key Developments and Events of 2015

This month we take a look at Somaliland.
A breakaway, semi-desert territory on the coast of the Gulf of Aden, Somaliland declared its independence from the larger Somalia after the overthrow of Somali military dictator Siad Barre in 1991.
Though not internationally recognized, Somaliland has a working political system, government institutions, a police force and its own currency. The territory has lobbied hard to win support for its claim to be a sovereign state.

The following is the chronology of key events in Somaliland for the month of June.

June 2, 2015: Upgrading work has started on Erigavo main – a project initiated by the city local government.

June 4, 2015: Somaliland senate house has approved the head of Somaliland’s high court, judge Adan Haji Ali who was appointed by President Silanyo.

June 9, 2015: the director of Somali immigration directorate Abdullahi Gafow accused Somaliland of Somali citizen’s mistreatment; this comes when five young travels deported back to Mogadishu.

June 21, 2015: Delegation led by Somaliland president Mahamoud Ahmad Silanyo paid a visit to Ethiopia and met Ethiopian Prime Minister discussing ways to boost bilateral relations between Ethiopia and the de-facto State.

June 22, 2015: Somaliland opposition leader Faysal Ali Warabe calls out the need of transitional government in Somaliland; a call dismissed by Somaliland authorities. He also called to end talks between Somaliland and Federal Government of Somalia.

June 23, 2015: Somaliland president met with Ethiopian Prime Minister Hailemariam Desalegn in the Ethiopian capital discussing ways forward for the mutual interests. Somaliland president talked his desire to maintain of what he called the outstanding relationship between his Administration and Ethiopia.

June 24, 2015: Borama mayor was ousted by the city council and who then elected Hassan Maydane to the mayoral position of Borama.

June 26, 2015: The 55th anniversary of British Somaliland independence was marked in Hargeysa .

June 29, 2015: A treacherous car accident claimed the lives of Mohamad Da’ud Youf, a journalist from Horncable TV, the planning director of Finance ministry Mr Wali Da’ud Igal and one of their bodyguards.
