Somaliland sun- While Somaliland has organized several election cycles since the collapse of the Somali central government in 1991, without reliable personal documents voter registration in the country has remained a challenge throughout multiple election cycles.

This anomaly which has remained a major threat to the very successfully democratization process the unrecognized nation has achieved is soon to be negated courtesy of the biometric voter registration undertaken by the National Election Commission in partnership with the Bringing Unity, Integrity, and Legitimacy to Democracy project, which is funded by the U.S. Agency for International Development and implemented by Creative Associates International. The five-year project provides critical assistance to help build electoral systems, strengthen civil society and encourage civic participation, with a particular focus on women, youth and other marginalized groups.
