KISMAYO (Somalilandsun)–Heavily armed Jubaland soldiers backed by Kenyan Defence Forces (KDF), serving under African Union mission to Somalia (AMISOM) on Wednesday have carried out a massive security operation in Kismayo, a strategic port city located 500 Km south of Mogadishu, reports said.
Eyewitnesses said the joint security forces have arrested dozens of people, most of them teenagers from several villages eastern Kismayo town in connection with Al shabab militants.Many youths have been arrested but the exact number has not yet been released by the allied forces.
Meanwhile, the business activities and the movements of the local people in and out of the town stopped momentarily during the crackdown.
“Joint troops were seen in heavy present at the main roads and junctions in the city as the public buses were banned from the main roads including the road to the airport,” residents said.
The officials in the town did provide immediate comments about the ongoing crackdown.
The search operations came after explosions and hit and run attacks against African Union troops and Jubaland forces occurred in Kismayo,the capital of Lower Jubba region in the past few weeks.
