SLSUN: Suspected Somali pirates have released a Chinese-owned vessel that they captured towards the end of last year.

The release of the Chinese-owned fishing vessel hijacked off Somalia’s northeastern coast last December marks a significant development in maritime security in the region.

According to a statement from the Chinese Embassy in Somalia, the rescue was achieved on January 13, 2025, through “unremitting efforts” by the Chinese government.

All 18 crew members aboard the vessel are reportedly safe.

This incident underscores the persistent challenges of piracy in Somali waters despite international efforts to enhance security in the region.

The successful rescue highlights the importance of international collaboration and vigilance in addressing such threats.
