Somalilandsun – The European Union (EU) and its partners, the Somali Federal Government-SFG Ministry of Education and ADRA, launched the fully refurbished “11 Janaayo Primary School” in Mogadishu on 01/12/2014
The school, which was completely destroyed during the civil war, was restored with financial support from the EU. Utilizing innovative designs, the school has now 8 brand new classrooms, 10 toilets, a fully equipped ICT centre, a school library, an office block and a clean source of energy. The support package also covers incentives for teachers, scholarships, specific support for girls, school supplies and capacity development of local school management committee and education officials.
The school opened its doors mid-September and has so far enrolled 261 children of which 149 are girls. As there is a total capacity for 400 students, the school will continue its outreach to enrol more children in line with the Federal Government’s efforts to restore public education in Somalia.
Support to this school and 31 other schools in Mogadishu, Galmudug and Baidoa is within the framework of the EU funded “Elmidoon” programme worth 2.4 million EUR. The programme aims to improve and expand primary and secondary education as well as vocational training opportunities for children and youth and target areas. In addition, it aims to enhance quality education through training of teachers and improvement of learning environment.
EU remains the largest donor to the education sector in Somalia. With contributions of 85 million EUR (2008-2013) and 60 million EUR (2014-2020) for education, the European Union is substantially involved in the positive education trends that have emerged in Somalia over the recent years. Of the new funding 45 million EUR will be disbursed over the Compact period of 2014-2016. (END) Press Statement
