SLSUN: After weeks of mounting pressure to step down, Justin Trudeau has announced his resignation as Prime Minister of Canada and as leader of the Liberal Party of Canada.
The resignation ends a long political chapter. Trudeau has been in office since 2015, when he led the Liberal Party back to power after a long absence from politics.
Trudeau said he would remain leader until a new Liberal leader is elected.
Following the resignation the BBC talks to Somalia in Canada
How do Somalis see it?
There are many Somalis living in Canada who have been entering the country as refugees in recent years, while some have been living in the country for a long time.
Somalis have reached a level where they have held positions in the country, reaching ministerial level and representative positions in their regions.
Somalis believe that political pressure led to his loss of office.
“The resignation of Prime Minister Justin Trudeau can be summed up as pressure from within the party, some of whom have stood up outside to demand his resignation,” said Hassan Farah Shire, who closely follows the political situation in Canada.
On the other hand, one of Trudeau’s most lauded accomplishments is his openness to immigrants, especially Somalis.
“Somalis will remember his help with refugees. During his time in office, many people entered this country, and he replaced the previous government, which appeared to be racist,” said Hassan Farah.
Meanwhile, in recent times, the living standards of Canadians have been deteriorating as inflation has become more widespread.
“I have been in the country for two years, and I have experienced unemployment. There is also the fact that this government is reminding us that rent and food have become expensive,” Fardawsa Ali, one of those affected by the unemployment situation in Canada, told the BBC.
The cities of Toronto and Edmonton are among the Canadian cities with the largest Somali populations.
Canada is due to hold its next federal election by October, but voting is expected to take place before then.
The official opposition Conservative Party, which is in first place in public opinion polls, has a leadership that has attracted a large number of votes in recent times.
It is a man named Pierre Poilievre, the leader of the Conservative Party, who, according to the predictions made, could become the next prime minister of Canada if an election were held.
