HARGEISA( Somalilandsun) – The President of Somaliland Republic HE Ahmed mohamed Mohamud Silanyo addressed thousands of colorful dressed citizens from a temporary erected VIP dais just in front of presidential palace situated along the main road of the city in a ceremony marking 23rd anniversary since revoking the voluntary union that turned oppressive in which Somaliland entered as an independent nation with South Somalia to create “Greater Somalia” ultimately proving disastrous.

It is on this date in 1991 that the people of Somaliland decided to break the yoke of a tyrannical regime by delinking themselves from what used to be “Greater Somalia” through resolutions arrived upon by representatives of its communities in Burao.

The nation marked the historic day in pomp & dance from its capital in Hargeisa to Regions & Districts not to mention global events commemorating the day especially in Western European countries and North American continent where the celebrations were accorded its relevance.

From the eve of 18th May jubilant citizens dodged sleeping with vehicles ornamented with banners of national flag causing a heavy traffic coupled with increased movement of anxious people eager to see the turn of events come Sunday morning.

From the onset of Sunday morning thousands of people; young & old, men & women dressed in the 3 colors of the national flag thronged major streets of the city splendidly walking side by side with uniformed law enforcement officers, trade unionists & students from various schools in the capital.

In his speech to the nation the president fortified his nation’s quest for self autonomy as inevitable and envisioned in a struggle whose time has attained maturity daring doubting Thomas “to come and witness the sheer bravery & determinations exhibited by national population who had resolved not to turn back the clock even if attainment of recognition were to take few more years rather than being forced to be part of an oppressive regime & shedding more blood”.

“We have established a Government based on proper security apparatus, respect for fundamental Rights & freedoms buttressed on multiparty democracy with periodic presidential, parliamentary and civic elections conducted at different times; a system bequeathed from our founding fathers that majority of the world is envious of”, bellowed President Silanyo amidst ovations & ululations from jubilant crowd.

The head of state advised Somalia to cease counting his country & people saying; “let me inform our brethren from Somalia to forget us because even in real live situation families migrate & since the people I rule have resolved to move ahead without them they should not count us as part & parcel of Somalia” before asking the attentive but euphoric crowd to remember them in their daily prayers so that God takes away their insecurity problems.

Silanyo used an analogy of a camel which he equated with the nation in his lecture to Somalia stating;

“We were forced to come back with the camel which we delivered to you in 1960 in ailing state of health. Let us therefore divorce our cohabitation by mutual consent and embrace brotherly bond as we are not ready to witness hatred & civil war because the legacy of those atrocities freshly lingers in our memories today”

On the ongoing Turkey mediated talks between his country & Somalia, Silanyo emphasized the need to bolstering them further in order to yield an outcome favorable to the well being of Somali people nourished on peace & security, brotherly neighborhood between two nations with strong diplomatic connections before commending moderators of those talks for initiating a roadmap intended to lead us out of stalemate.

The event was parked with entertainment through procession by discipline forces from military to police, immigration officers to custodial corps forcing anticipated population to position themselves at strategic locations that allows visibility.

While the function was in progress movement of humans & vehicles was curtailed as measures of detecting insecurity, but no sooner were alleys cleared to general public, than people thronged the street in big numbers as if they were being held indoors.

Elsewhere V-P Abdirahman Abdillahi Zeyli’i flanked by a number of cabinet ministers led Borama town residents of Awdal region in commemorating the 23rd anniversary of the day when the nation revoked its voluntary union with Somalia at Borama main stadium where thousands of citizens turned for the celebrations.
