Somalilandsun- Tunisia – perceived as the sole success story of the Arab uprisings – is also a key battleground in the internationally-backed ‘war on terror’.
In our latest in-depth article, Saferworld tells the story of how violence started following the fall of President Zine al-Abidine Ben Ali, how it was sustained, and what is needed to put an end to it.
We spoke to civil society organisations, Tunisian government officials, foreign diplomats, and people who live in Medenine, Sidi Bouzid and Sidi Hassine. From their perspectives, we unpack the risks and shortcomings of counter-terror and countering violent extremism in Tunisia and urge all actors to refocus on delivering the transition and improving young people’s lives as the bulwark of the country’s future stability.
