Somalilandsun- Kayd Somali Arts and Culture would like to invite you to a documentary screening of Through the Fire at Oxford House, Derbyshire St, London E2 6HG on Friday 29th November, 6pm-8.30pm.
Trailer
“In 1991, Somalia’s central government collapsed in the face of insurrection and civil war. Soon after, Somaliland seceded to form a separate nation. Thousands fled, but some chose to stay. ‘Through the Fire’ is the story of three such women who have risked their lives to sustain their communities through decades of war and famine. Overcoming seemingly insurmountable obstacles, we see how they are engineering creative solutions to bring about peace and renewal. When the world abandoned them and their communities, they refused to give up or walk away. This is their story.
Through the Fire shows a side of Somalia and Somaliland beyond the all-too-familiar news reports of piracy, war, and famine. It tells the stories of remarkable Somali women who risk their lives to run essential humanitarian projects that have sustained their communities through decades of conflict.” Through The Fire
The documentary features three incredible Somali women living in Somalia and Somaliland. Dr Hawa Abdi runs a medical centre in Somalia and was a 2012 Nobel Peace Prize nominee.Edna AdanIsmail, is a former Minister of Foreign Affairs for Somaliland. She manages the ‘Edna Adan Hospital’ in Somaliland, which she founded in 1998. Ilwad Elman,a young Canadian Somali, runs Elman’s Centre in Mogadishu.
They have each fought against seemingly insurmountable obstacles to spearhead efforts towards peace, laying foundations for social, health and educational infrastructure. The stories of these women and all that they have achieved are truly inspiring. When the world abandoned them and their communities, they refused to give up or walk away.
After the screening, a talk will be given by Edna Adan. There will also be a live stream with Ilwad Elman in Mogadishu.
