ERIGAVO (Somalilandsun) – The first citizens owned fisheries project shall be established in the ports of Mayd and Berbera in Sanaag and Sahil regions respectively.
This was revealed by the public and communication manager of Pontus marine ltd Mr. Ahmed Abdulqadir Ahmed during a public share issue in Sanaag region held at the Sanaag hotel conference hall in Erigavo where participants who included fishing cooperatives, Regional and local government officials, business/traditional/community/political leaders as well as ordinary citizens gave a thumbs up to the innovative fishery sector development project.
“So far hundreds of somalilanders in the Diaspora have already acquired Pontus marine ltd fisheries development shares” said Mr. Ahmed as he informed that $5m worth of shares are on offer with citizens from Marooji-jeeh, Sahil and Toghdeer regions having already acquired them during recent launch events in Hargeisa, Burao and Berbera towns.
Pontus Marine Ltd is Somaliland’s first global fishing company focusing on supplying quality fishery to both domestic and overseas markets through funds to be accrued from ongoing public issue of company shares worth $5m in addition to the projected 300 employment opportunities to be created through the venture in the first two years of operations.
Elaborating on the fishery sector development program the Pontus Marine ltd official said that citizens of Somaliland with over 600 species of fishes have not benefited directly thus the company’s strategy of establishing markets to the US, Ethiopia, Europe, china and Australia.
During his presentation communication specialists Ahmed Abdulqadir Ahmed informed that the Pontus Marine Ltd initiative of fisheries sector development through harnessing local resources has three three main important timelines of the program that are:
• Availing Cold Storage facilities
• Transportation and
• Marketing
On the strategies of achieving planned timelines and objectives the Sanaag residents were told “After establishing cold storage facilities in Mayd port Sanaag region and a viable land and sea transport system emanating from Mayd and based in Berbera the next stage will be international marketing beginning with Ethiopia and later proceeding to the various countries in Europe where fish remains in great demand”
Speakers representing the various communities in Sanaag region and the regional and local governments in unionism welcomed the Pontus marine project terming it as the beginning of the light of development in the sprawling region based in the east of the country.
