Somaliland: President Silanyo Pardons Prisoners

HARGEISA (Somalilandsun) – Over 400 convicts have been serving their sentences in various prisons have been released by the custodial corps.

The convicts regained their freedom following a presidential pardon effected by the head of state as part of the country’s 22nd independence anniversary commemorations. This is an annual activity undertaken by the president a few days before or after 18th of May which is the date that the country regained its sovereignty from Somalia.

According to the custodial corps national operations officer, Commander Abdirahman Ahmed Mahmud who was speaking to the Dawan media group, “491 prisoners who were serving sentences of 2 years and less were released from 13 prisons on 12th June 2013”

The commander informed that the custodial corps effected the release of the convicts following a presidential communiqué that decreed that he has pardoned prisoners with light sentences ranging from 2 years and below.

The ex-convicts who are now back in society were released from the Hargeisa, Mandera, Gabile, Borame, Burao, Berbera, Ainabo, Gara’adag, El-afwein, Dahar, Las anod, Baligubadle and Erigavo prisons.
