Somalilandsun: From humble beginnings in 1998 the Somaliland police force which is now 27 has managed to ensure that law and order is maintained through cooperation with other security agencies and civilians.
Founded in 1993 out of the Somali National Movement (SNM) two years after withdrawal from the 1960 union with Somalia and reclamation of self-rule, the force commemorated it’s 27 anniversary at functions in the country’s 14 adminstrative regions with national event held in the capital Hargeisa where the head of state was chief guest.
At the national event President Muse Bihi who congratulated on his behalf, that if his administration and citizens the service on its anniversary celebration stated that the prevailing peace and security in Somaliland is due to the diligence of police officers so e of whom he awarded.
Tasked with responsibilities for law enforcement in the Republic of Somaliland the force which falls under the Interior of interior is has its headquarters in the capital Hargeisa from where a commissioner appointed by the president oversee the implementation of law and order nationwide through fourteen regional commands.
The 27 years old law enforcement agency works closely with the Criminal Investigation Department (CID), and the military, in extension traditional and local leaders.
From its 1993 humble beginnings the over 50,000 Somaliland police force now boosts of ability to deter terrorism activities, crime investigation, protection of public safety and property, court arraignments and traffic management among others.
Apart from regular duties unit, the Somaliland police force is comprised of the Rapid Response Unit-RRU , a crack anti-terrorism elite unit, the Special Protection Unit-SPU which British-trained and tasked with the protection of local and foreign dignitaries.

The 27th anniversary commemoration of the establishment of the Police Force of the Republic of Somaliland was held at the Police Headquarters, and was attended by the President of the Supreme Court, the Attorney General, commanders of the various forces in the country, and members of the council. ministers, members of the KULMIYE party leadership, some of the heads of various security bodies, hero-pilot Ahmed Mohamed Hassan (Ahmed Dheere) and many other dignitaries,.
Speakers at the function were unanimous on the apt performance of the Somaliland police force in its important role of maintaining security and protecting the lives and property of the people nationwide.
Colonel Abdiaziz Sheikh Ismail Sheikh Hassan, the Deputy Chief of Police Operations, shared with the public the various crimes that have taken place in the country in the last year and how the police have dealt with them, underlining that the force Police have arrested most suspects in connection with crimes committed in the country, including murder and rape.
The Commander of the Somaliland Police Force, Brigadier General Mohamed Aden Saqadhi (Dabagale), revealed about the significant progress made by the Police Force in the areas of training, transportation and access to other essential resources for their work in the community, stressing that this has been attained by development of clear plan and goal..
Brigadier Saqadhi said that his command has given special importance to raising the awareness of its officers on how to work with citizens while building knowledge of investigations, adding that major reforms have been accomplished.
The Minister of Interior , Mr. Mohamed Kahin Ahmed, congratulated the Police Force of the Republic on their anniversary, explained in depth the role of the Police in the security of the country and the safety of life and property.
In conclusion the Minister who is in charge of security thence the force said , “everybody should work closely with the police thus facilitate a conducive environment for maintanance of law and order” as he called on its rank and file officers to work harder.”
To culminate the ceremony, the President of the Republic of Somaliland, HE Muse Bihi Abdi, congratulated the Police Force and said that the entire nation aware of the hard work undertaken sometimes resulting in loss of life is appreciative , “Congratulations to all ranks of police officers and their families in commemoration of 27 years of dedicated service” adding that the nation stands with them.
President Bihi presented gold medals and and promoted various officers of the Police Force, who have shown diligence during their tenure service also inspected the logistic capacity and some infrastructure s of the force. concluding with the official opening of the new officers unquote
