HARGEISA (Somalilandsun) – Elders of the Guurti were distributed copies of the voter registration bill for perusal and subsequent action related to Approval or rejection during a session of the house with a majority quorum.
The bill which upon approval by the elders shall be forwarded to the president for signature and promulgation as law was originally submitted to the Guurti by the House of Representatives which are the Somaliland lower chamber of Parliament.
Guurti’s expedited action in the bill shall pave way for registration of voters which is a precondition for conduct of presidential and parliamentary polls slated for mid 2015.
Though the House of Representatives upon approving the registration bill forwarded it to the upper chambers almost a month ago, anomalies noticed by the Guurti chair Suleiman Aden led to delays in debate by elders.
The just approved seven members National Elections Commission has the mandate to supervise voter registration six months before holding any elections as per Somaliland laws
