Somalilandsun: A conference on strengthening security, combating drugs and tackling environmental degradation was held in El-afweine district in Saanag region on Thursday.
The conference focused on strengthening security, prevention and the fight against drugs, especially alcohol, which is said to be widespread in the district as well as combating environment degradation through destruction of wet tress for use as charcoal.
The meet organized by the El-afweine district administration had participants including the of Saanag region Eng. Ahmed Osman, Dararweyne mayor, Saanag police chief, El-afweine police chief, El-afweine traditional leaders peace committee, elders, women, youth, members of the El-afweine government ministries and other officials.
The mayor of El-afweine district, Abdirahin Aw Yusuf Ahmed, opened the conference by stating the purpose and issues discussed. .
The meeting was addressed by members of the community, including women, elders, traditional leaders and officials, all of whom spoke in the same way about the reasons why peace between the two communities could not continue.
They described this as a result of the non-implementation of Magaha (Blood money) that was as a result of agreements reached between two former warring communities in the district.
Governor of Saanag region Eng. Ahmed Osman Hassan, who was referring to the officials’ remarks, stressed the importance of strengthening security and implementing inter-clan mediation agreements on time.
Said he “ But if this does not happen, it will lead to problems between the reconciled communities” adding that security in El-afweine district is improving, but that it is necessary to maintain security in accordance with the agreement reached.
The regional administrator stressed that apart from security the most massive act requiring urgent is the increased use of an assortment of drugs mainly alcohol
“This problem has significantly affected the community, especially youth thence the imperatives of government officials and leaders in society, to effect change jointly” said the commander of the Saanag regional police force Suleiman Duale Ubahle (Dhego-cade), adding that the security forces will strengthen interventions to deter activities deterring and weakening agreements.
On the other hand, the mayor of Dararweyne district in El-afweine district, Mohamud Hassan, addressed the gathering on the security situation in Dararweyne, one of the areas where clashes have taken place between clans.
