Somalilandsun – Ugandan President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has lauded Kenyans for rejecting the International Criminal Court (ICC) blackmail and electing President Uhuru Kenyatta and his deputy William Ruto who are facing charges at the Hague-based court.
President Museveni congratulated Kenyans for defying the looming ICC trials and voting for Kenyatta and Ruto overwhelmingly.
Museveni said that the ICC trials were just a blackmail to block Kenyatta and Ruto from contesting for the top job and assuming office.
“I want to salute Kenyans for rejecting the International Criminal Court blackmail,” said Museveni.
In his speech during the inauguration of Uhuru Kenyatta as the fourth President of the Republic of Kenya, Museveni said that there was a group of people abusing the ICC process for their own selfish agenda.
Museveni said that he supported the ICC as it would fight impunity but noted that it “failed” on this task.
“I was one of those that supported the ICC because I abhor impunity. However the usual opiniated and arrogant actors using their careless and shallow analysis have now distorted the purpose of that institution. They are now using it to install leaders of their choice in Africa and eliminate the ones they do not like,” added the Ugandan Head of State.
Museveni termed the 2007/08 post election violence as a “regrettable and must be condemned” deed.
He however noted that Uganda referred the Lord Resistance Army (LRA) leader Joseph Kony to the ICC since he was operating outside of Uganda.
