Somalilandsun – IKEA is taking its famous flat pack strategies and applying them for a new cause – refugee shelters. Equipped with significantly more advantages than your basic tent, IKEA hopes these new shelters will drastically improve conditions at refugee camps worldwide.
Each shelter comes with solar panels and insulation, as well as being high enough for a person to stand up in inside. In addition, while tents are designed to last only 6 months, these shelters address the reality of refugee camps, which often must last several years.
The IKEA flat pack shelters for refugees are currently being tested by with Somali refugees in UN camps. IKEA will make necessary changes from the feedback before releasing them as “open source” worldwide.
