Somalilandsun- Residents of Middle Shebelle region of Somalia fully acknowledge services sometimes involving loss of life provided by AMISOM
This was revealed during a function in which Ten fattened bulls contributed by Middle Shebelle residents were handed over to AMISOM personal stationed in the Somalia region.
During the handover ceremony at Jowhar town, the Middle Shebelle regional capital, the governor said area residents were not only aware of the life threatening anti Al-Shabaab operations the 22,126 uniformed personnel of African mission undertake, sometimes with dire consequences but grateful as well.
The African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM) is an active, regional peacekeeping mission operated by the African Union with the approval of the United Nations. It was created by the African Union’s Peace and Security Council on 19th January 2007 with an initial six month mandate.
The Principal aim is to provide support for the Federal Government of Somalia in its efforts to stabilize the country and foster political dialogue and reconciliation.
AMISOM is also mandated to facilitate the delivery of humanitarian aid and create necessary conditions for the reconstruction and sustainable development of Somalia.
AMISOM staff comes from a wide range of nations across Africa. The Force Headquarters of the military component, for example, is staffed by officers from Burundi, Cameroon, Djibouti, Ethiopia, Gambia, Ghana, Kenya, Niger, Nigeria, Senegal, Sierra Leone, Uganda and Zambia. The bulk of its troops though come from six countries: Uganda, Burundi, Djibouti, Kenya, Ethiopia and Sierra Leone. Read more about AMISOM
