Somalilandsun- Transparency in Somaliland has come a long way since I was member of the council of ministers a few years back.
This was stated by Edna Adan during a speech to participants witnessing the official opening of new and permanent office premises of the Somaliland Diaspora Agency-SDA in Hargeisa where she termed function as a milestone of the ministry of foreign affairs she once run.
“Seeing the beautiful offices of the SDA is pride in a milestone as well as in knowledge that diaspora activities are set for better times and outcome” said Edna Adan
The function in which Edna Adan and other prominent dignitaries witnessed the foreign minister Dr Saad Ali Shire official commission the new Somaliland Diaspora Agency (SLDA) premises that is under the Ministry of Foreign Affairs & International Cooperation of the Republic of Somaliland.
Revealing that during her stint as the minister of foreign affairs under the administration of former president Rayale Karin, her ministerial offices were bare of equipment not to mention housed under rundown structures, Edna Adan said the leap that sees the now ultra modern housed ministry built separate offices for its departments like the SDA is proof that the country is set for better days.
Reminiscing on her handover ceremony as she left the ministry of foreign affairs, the prominent daughter of Somaliland said, “when I handed over to my successor all the pennies remaining from my ministry budget, my colleagues lambasted me for establishing standards detrimental to their wellbeing during similar occasions.
In elaboration Edna Adan said that prior to her milestone handover in which she counted everything especially finances to her successor, similar activities only saw the incumbent and incoming ministers shake hands infront of cameras and done, thus the outgoing person ended up pocketing whatever balance Was in the ministry’s coffers at the time of departure.
“Though I received a lot of flak for the apt manner of handover, it is now established standards Since that historic gesture for a proper account of equipment and funds etc between incoming and outgoing ministers in Somaliland.
According to Edna Adan who is currently a member of the Somaliland national international recognition committee whose membership is comprised of prominent Sons for she is the only female, of the country, a government can not function properly nor serve aptly unless transparency and accountability is practiced.
