HARGEISA (Somaliland sun) – The tenure of the president and members of parliament has been extended to the first quarter of 2017.
This development follows a decision by Guurti, the Somaliland upper chamber of parliament, allocating April 2017 as the period when presidential and parliamentary elections shall be held in the country. The much talked about polls that were to have taken place on the 26th June 2015 became untenable after the National election commission proposed postponement due to what they termed as technical and legal encumbrances.
While the tenure of the executive and that of legislative chambers shall expire at the same time now as per the new ballot dates it is worth mentioning that the president has only been in office for one term while parliamentarians elected in 2015 are in the second half of their illegal tenure now running to seven years +
Meanwhile the rumoured protest demonstration by some opposition elements dissipated to nothing thence the situation in all major centers of the country are calm as usual with citizens engaged in debates of the merits and demerits of rescheduling the elections for 22 month.
