Lessons from a Decade of Multi-Partyism in Somaliland and the Way Forward
Somalilandsun – It is an extraordinary achievement to hold peaceful and credible elections in a post-conflict context where institutions are fragile.
Somaliland-SL, which withdrew from its union with Somalia in 1991 after a long civil war, successfully held five elections in the decade
from 2002 to 2012 which took place without any major outbreaks of violence thus resulting in the clean bill of health accorded “Credible and Representative “by both International and local election observers.
Accordingly this has been made successful by The “culture of dialogue” which is an indispensable home brewed mechanism for resolving disputes
This is per the Academy for Peace and Development-APD that further urges Somalilanders to utilize Lessons from a Decade of Multi-Partyism in order to chart a map for the Way Forward in a report titled ”Confronting the Future of Somaliland’s Democracy.’‘
Academy for Peace and Development (APD) was established in 1998 as a research institute in collaboration with the War-torn Societies Project (WSP) International (Interpeace). APD Profile:
